If you don’t have a job or want to start business, exporting organically grown fruits and vegetables from Uganda is a viable option for you. Exporting on your own thou is quite expensive and that is where Tropical Dynasty, an exporting company with over 10 years’ experience, comes in.
LinkmeUg caught up with Ephraim Ekisa, the ICT officer of the company about how youth can supply products to the company for export.
Ekisa: I joined Tropical Dynasty as an intern having been referred by a friend, I was studying International Business Management at UCU. Today I do branding for the company, web page and social media maintenance.
When I joined I worked in all sections of the company – receiving deliveries, sorting, grading, packing section, and going to the airport to learn how to clear products for export.
Opportunities in Agribusiness
Ekisa: Youth have opportunities in the production stage like growing crops. Being a middle man is cheaper and easier but to suit international standards, you need to grow your own vegetables to control quality, damage, pests, and diseases.
Beside exporting, value addition too is an option for youth. We export the finest products but whatever doesn’t make it to the international market can be used to make products back home.
The international community is importing lots of hot peppers and you don’t need a green house for those.
Ekisa: Tropical Dynasty is running youth projects in Nakaseke, Manafwa and Mayuge where groups of youth are trained to grow hot peppers. We are already buying from them.
Other exports include; Matooke, Sweet bananas, Garden eggs (white eggplants) Hot pepper, Chillies, Peanuts, S.Potatoes, Sugar cane, Aloe Vera, Beans, Passion fruits, Dried beans, Okra, Avocado and Pineapples.
Emphasis should be put on value addition, for example supplying beans in a sack is not as valuable as clean beans in packets already labeled. Post harvest handling is very key because it ensures minimal loss of products, less damage and no pest infestation.
How to supply Tropical Dynasty
Ekisa: Tropical Dynasty grows some of the products we export, but also buys from several farmers to add onto what we have.
Before you decide what to supply Tropical, come to our office in Rubaga and talk to the procurement officer and agronomist. That way you will know what we need, and in what condition.
