Have you set goals and even started on projects only to reach half way and realize you should never have started them in the first place? What about the times you ignore an idea and later realize it is what you need to be doing? This is where a personal mission statement helps.
LinkmeUg caught up with Nicola Smith of Challenges World Wide on what a mission statement helps us achieve.
Nicola: A personal mission statement is your constitution, an expression of your vision and values. It becomes the standard by which you measure everything else. It’s the invisible hand that guides you and helps establish what’s important in your life.
Why a mission statement?
Nicola: It offers the opportunity to establish what’s important and even make a decision to stick to it.
- Provides focus.
- Simplifies any decision-making processes.
- Holds you accountable for your decisions and actions.
- Clarifies what is important to you.
- Helps you design your life, instead of having it designed for you.
How to make a personal mission statement
Nicola: The first step is to Identify past successes – personal or professional.
Spend some time identifying four or five examples where you have had personal success in recent years. Identify a common theme among them because it helps you identify what is important to you.
Next is to identify your values
Outline a list of characteristics that you believe best identify who you are as well as your priorities. Identify which value is most important to you.
Step 3 is to identify your contributions
List ways you feel you could make a difference. In an ideal situation, how do you believe you can contribute to the world, family, employer, community, and friends?
Step 4 – Identify your goals
Consider your priorities in life and the goals you have for yourself. Listing your personal short-term and long-term goals is valuable in this step.
Example of a mission statement
Nicola: You statement could read like this, “My mission is to exercise my creativity and innovative ideas by developing articles, books and products that change lives and society for the better. I will use my talents and abilities consistently. I will not hide them simply because they will not always be immediately recognized. I want all of my work to be a product of God’s inspiration and a blessing to the world. I will be loyal to family, friends and God.”
Challenges Worldwide offers young people the chance to play a key role in reducing poverty in some of the world’s poorest countries with volunteers working with growing businesses across Africa.
A mission statement could be what you need to live by the decisions you make.
