|World heavyweight social network Facebook has made a huge move into dedicated video services, pitting it against YouTube and TV networks. Ugandans are sure to run for this service.
Facebook users can now watch a tab that will offer a range of shows, some of which will be funded by the social network.
Users will be able to discover new shows as watch will be personalized, based on what their friends are watching and be able to view comments and also connect friends plus dedicated groups for shows.
The social network already has content lined up and has inked deals with millennial-oriented media groups Vox media, Buzz Feed, ATTN, Group Nine media, and others to produce shows.
The shows that will run will include; Actual Entertainment, Cookery, Fitness, Travel-themed programmes, Major League Baseball, Women’s Basketball, Parenting shows, and a Safari show from National Geographic that play well on smartphone screens. Ugandan programs like ‘Don’t mess with Kansiime’ will most like go up next.
However, it will not be able to play flagship drama’s like ‘Game Of Thrones’ which are expensive to produce and better suited for playback on TV’s.
Watch could open up new revenue potential for both Facebook and programme makers, while users can expect to see targeted advertising before and during the show.
