The story of Nigeria’s national coaches has another page added to it with the firing of Mr. Stephen Keshi for a second time since he took office in 2011. This time the Nigerian Football Federation says its because Keshi applied to Ivory Coast as manager of its national team. He however dismissed this as a misunderstanding claiming it was an agent who added his name to the list without his knowledge.
Keshi led Nigeria to the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa and for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil where they reached the second round before losing to France. After world cup his contract was not renewed but rather retained on a match-by-match contract. This too ended after failure to reach the 2015 Nations Cup, but when then Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan intervened, Keshi retained his job.
Shaibu Amodu, the team’s technical director, takes over as caretaker coach a position he has held on 4 different occasions.
